Summer is here – and with it, the desire to explore something new. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a quiet afternoon, or just a short break in nature, we’re sharing five destinations in Thuringia that are off the beaten path yet full of charm and discovery. As a company based in Erfurt, we love exploring our region and are excited to present some of our personal favorites.
1. Altenstein Park (Bad Liebenstein)
A vast landscape park where history meets nature. Grottos, scenic viewpoints, historic bridges, and a stately palace make this park ideal for leisurely walks with breathtaking views. Especially in summer, the park reveals its full charm – including a natural cave open to visitors. Spanning over 160 hectares, it was once the summer residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen and is now considered one of Thuringia’s most important historic gardens.
2. Hanstein Castle Ruins (Eichsfeld)
Towering above the Werra Valley, Hanstein is one of the most impressive castle ruins in Thuringia. With origins dating back to the 9th century, the fortress once marked the border between Thuringia and Hesse. Today, it offers panoramic views and well-preserved structures, including a walkable tower. A medieval festival held here each year brings history to life.
3. Fairytale Forest Saalburg (Saalburg-Ebersdorf)
A magical destination especially for families. Along a 1.5-kilometer trail through wooded grounds, visitors discover more than 40 hand-crafted fairytale scenes – from Snow White to Little Red Riding Hood. It’s a place full of nostalgia and nature, complete with playgrounds and the largest witch’s house in Europe.
4. Molsdorf Palace (Erfurt)
Located just outside the Thuringian capital, this Baroque gem with its peaceful palace gardens is a quiet cultural highlight. Built in the 18th century, it once belonged to the eccentric Count von Gotter. Today, it houses exhibitions and cultural events in the summer – ideal for a relaxed stroll and a touch of elegance close to the city.
5. Ebertswiese Mountain Lake (Thuringian Forest)
Once a quarry, today a hidden paradise for swimming and hiking. This crystal-clear lake in the heart of the forest lies directly along the famous Rennsteig hiking trail. Just a short walk away is the Spitterfall – Thuringia’s highest natural waterfall. A perfect spot for peace, nature, and cool refreshment on hot days.
Conclusion:
Thuringia is full of surprises – especially for those willing to look beyond the well-known sights. Whether you’re into nature, history, or simply a peaceful place to pause, these five destinations offer inspiration for your next outing. From lakes and forests to castles and gardens, summer in Thuringia has something for everyone.
